A handy balloon for total extraperitoneal repair of inguinal hernia

چکیده
BACKGROUND The creation of extraperitoneal space with the help of balloon is helpful in the learning curve of total extraperitoneal repair of inguinal hernia. But the cost of the balloon with other disposable items is one of the limiting factors in the popularity of this operation. By using a homemade balloon, nondispoasable ports and suturing the mesh we have been able to reduce the cost considerably. We would like to present our technique of making the balloon. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between September 2005 and November 2006 we operated 65 consecutive patients of inguinal hernia using the balloon made from the 'video camera drape'. The drape was cut and fixed on a 10 mm suction irrigation cannula. The suction irrigation cannula was used as an obturator as well to inflate the balloon in the extraperitoneal space. RESULTS We succeeded in creating the extraperitoneal space in all patients with the help of this balloon without any complications and conversion to open. There was no leak and bursting of the balloon. CONCLUSION It is cheap, strong, sterile and readily available material for making the balloon for creating the extraperitoneal space in the laparoscopic repair of the inguinal hernia.

Laparoscopic-Assisted Percutaneous Extraperitoneal Closure for Inguinal Hernia Repair in Children: An Initial Experience
Over the past two decades, laparoscopy has advanced and multiple techniques for inguinal hernia repair have been established. Laparoscopic-assisted percutaneous extraperitoneal closure (LAPEC) for inguinal hernia repair in children, is one of the most simple and reliable methods. The present study aimed to assess the safety and feasibility of the LAPEC of inguinal hernia in children. From Januar...
متن کاملA Contralateral Complication of Extra-peritoneal Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair
A 63 year old female underwent an uncomplicated total extraperitoneal repair of a right direct inguinal hernia. One week later she presented with a strangulated left femoral hernia. We believe the dissection of the extraperitoneal space caused bleeding which tracked down through the femoral canal resulting in a femoral hernia. To date there are no reports of such a complication following total ...

متن کاملUnusual cause of pneumomediastinum in a laparoscopic extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair
Pneumomediastinum is an extremely rare complication after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. Very few cases have been reported in the surgical literature to date and most reports indicate pneumoperitoneum from the transabdominal preperitoneal approach as a causative factor. This case report describes a patient in whom an elective total extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair was complicated by...
متن کاملConversion to Stoppa Procedure in Laparoscopic Totally Extraperitoneal Inguinal Hernia Repair
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Conversion to open surgery is an important problem, especially during the learning curve of laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal (TEP) inguinal hernia repair. METHODS Here, we discuss conversion to the Stoppa procedure during laparoscopic TEP inguinal hernia repair. Outcomes of patients who underwent conversion to an open approach during laparoscopic TEP inguinal her...
